You clutch and cleave, but they still leave, and you're partly to blame
Sorrow is written on your heart and face and "stranger" is in their name
You tried and tried and failed and failed, exhausted in the end
All your efforts and your shortcomings together have cost you a friend
You cry, you're crushed, your heart is broken. Yet, you have resolve
Your friend may never see you like this, but your husband sees it all
He sees the mess you made, the mess she made, the mess itself
He sees you look around, wondering it you'll lose someone else
The truth is, it is your fault, though your pride tells you what she's done
It's your fault because you held so tightly that one phone call left you undone
It's your fault because you could have tried harder or shared how she hurt you
But time is up, the deal is done, and there's nothing left to pursue
You breathe a breath of relief and of brokenness all at once inside
Was she a thing you caged in your heart when you were supposed to let her fly?
Fly, she would, though she would blame you that how you letting her go was wrong
Maybe you couldn't handle the reputation of always driving away everyone
The friendship is over, despite your love and failure, and you can't afford to sit and think
Because if you do, you'll cry some more, and then call and tell her what you think
It's time to let her fly, even if she always hates you for it
It's time to let go, to never again pursue it.
